Classifying Polygons

Back to Geometry

There are many, many different polygons. Over the coming tutorials, you will learn how to classify and name them in different ways. One way is to classify them based on whether their angles and sides are identical or different.

Based on these variables, we can call them regular or irregular shapes.

What are Regular and Irregular Shapes?

There are two criteria that must be met for a shape to be considered a regular shape. The first is that all of its sides need to be of equal length. The second is that all of its angles need to be identical (roll your mouse over the image below to see).

Irregular shapes have got at least one unique side and/or angle; and sometimes more than one is unique (roll your mouse over the image below to see).

Move on to the next tutorial to cover more naming conventions.
